Changing A Mac OS X Folder Icon 19
Finder
Hey
You may want to after a while change a folder icon. This is a pretty simple process to do but its hard to get the hang off. But Apple Mac Tips will be your to savior. To begin, find an icon you like. A Good place is interface lift.
Once you have found your icon right click and “Get Info” on both you icon file and the folder you wish to change.
You will notice in the top left hand corner is a small icon, this will be the key to the process.
![]()
What you need to do is click on the icon. There will be a blue outline around the icon.
![]()
Now press Command + C, this will copy the icon to your clip board.
On your folder icon that you want to change, click it again and press Command + V. This will paste the icon.
This may take a couple of times to work, but you will get the hang of it. Have fun.
Where To Next?

Thanks so much for making this painless, quick and easy. I spent a whole afternoon sorting thru untold amounts of junk, redirects and complicated tools only to come across yours—The Best—this morning.
This is especially helpful on our home computer that’s shared by three kids ages 10, 9 and 6 — none of whom ever remembers to put their materials in the right place as a means of avoiding a cluttered desktop.
You rock!

It works until I drag the folder to the Dock.. then it changes to a ugly looking folder icon.

Yes Zakarias! I am having the same disappointment… It was actually the look of my dock which I wanted to change, and it didn’t work…

Did not work. I do not have IPhoto could that be the reason. Or could it be because my image is a JPEG image?

Hey tnx for the explanation of this problem, I know that not mo many people do read this replies on a post like this, but I have some advice for those who do read… This is what i meant, if, sometimes, the desired picture icon(ex: picture in JPG format) does not want to stay as you’re icon, simply open it in PREVIEW and select (all/or desired part) and then use copy/paste on the instructed place…
One again a great TIP for all of us who want to personalize some stuff on our’e MAC’s…Comment By Milenko Simic on March 20th, at 4:30 am
