Great post! Thanks for all this info.

However, I have Snow Leopard and went through the xcode installation and no luck with the screen savers.

Anyone care to upload that “security camera” screensaver onto a site for a download? I’m personally interested in that screensaver and is the main reason I downloaded xcode to begin with. I’m not removing xcode completely from my computer. Ugh :-(

I got everything to work just fine, with your suggestions. I like the basic black and white versions that are embedded in the systems folder. However, having the ability to adjust he colors, timing, and depth allow me to personalize it according to my mood. Thanks for posting this website.

The instructions must be wrong. I cannot drag the any .qtz files to the screen saver to install them as screen savers. What haven’t you told us about this?
Dragging and dropping into the preview window does absolutely nothing!

Likewise, I cannot load Image TV on iBook G4 (MacOS X v10.5) with 1.33 GHz and 1.25 GB RAM.
Tried to copy/paste into compositions folder, but still not an option to load as a screensaver.
However, I could preview it after a slow load within Quicktime application.

One interesting thing : for most of the screensavers, you can just select the icon in the finder and use the space key to have the preview. No need to even drag an drop it to the screensaver app.

I just found your idea via delicious link.
I tried this and it is interesting but one needs one of the newer macs for it to work.
I have a 2003 powerbook and its graphics options are fair today. Core image being emulated via software.
I would write a comment into your essay as a warning because installing these screen savers on my machine compromises all of the others, the options buttons no longer work or disappear, one saver opens another, slow and choppy renders, a lot of bugs essentially, so I removed all of them and I am back to normal.
Also the only way I could install these is by option+drag into the screen saver folder, perhaps your newer machine is an acrobat!

Like I have said in the post make sure you look in: Macintsoh HD > System > Library > Compositions and not Macintosh HD > Library > Compositions.

They should be in your system folder and not your personal folder.

I think Kaledidescope is also very good. You just need to go to options and add a colorful photo to get the right effect.

I thinks its /Users/[name]/Pictures

or its /Users/[name]/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Originals

have a play around with those folders and see what comes up.
