The folder you browse can be searched directly, even system folders. The rule Apple used seem to be "the user opened a system folder and look, now he searched ... we can show the system files now!".

Often it's one of the Library folders I need to search. I have placed aliases of them in the Finder sidebar and I select one of them, type in the search word in the Finder search box and then click Library on top so I stay in this folder. This last step was not necessary in Tiger and I still don't know whether it's a bug or a feature in Leopard. In Tiger OS X would stay in the folder I had browsed to.

So no extra tricks to search in the Library are really needed, but of course you do need to do it once for every Library folder on the other hand. But usually when I do search in these folders I have a pretty good feel for if the files I'm looking for will be found in my user Library or the main Library.
