Note that you can open and edit .docx files with Word 2008 for Mac! So there definitely is a way to open and edit those files on a Mac.

I'm a sucker for widgets! There are heaps of them out there that cater for individual interests but here are some general interest ones that I find useful -

Gmail; Mail Widget; BBC Listen Again; iPlayer; Weather; VAT Calculator; Time Machine; Time Map; junk Meter; Egg Timer.

Of those already mentioned I use iStat Pro, word Counter and Pemdas.

Re: Wikipedia, I've set up 'Butler' so I can search Wikipedia from the menu bar, along with several other search engines and shopping comparison sites - very convenient.

I haven't looked at the suggested Wikipedia widget but just wanted to say that we actually have Wikipedia built in to OS X 10.5. Select and click any word and select Look up in Dictionary. Then open the Dictionary Preferences. Click the check box for Wikipedia (if it's not already there).

Another great widget I find very useful is "TV Show tracker" that allow you to keep up with the upcoming TV shows. Find it at:

If you don't want to open up Word, but you want a more dignified editor than TextEdit, check out Bean.

Bean is a lightweight (read: quick to open) text editor with a live word/char. count (at the bottom of the window) and a selection word/char. count.

Also, thanks for app update widget. I was thinking about an app that does just that earlier this week! :)
