Auto-Completion Of Words 11

Auto-Completion Of Words

Hey

Just a quick tip this evening, which I may have mentioned before (I can’t find the post if I have). Its a very simple and quick way to complete words using any Cocoa apps such as TextEdit and Mail to name a few. Although I don’t find it that useful for completing words, it is great to help you find spellings to long and complicated words that you may not know.

To autocomplete any word start typing and then press Option + Escape or just F5. You will then be presented with a long list of words where you can use the up and down arrows to select the word you want.

Very simple and very useful. I might use it more and more.

i tried this one and it didn’t work for me on 10.5.7. when i did option F5, my mac started reading the page to me out loud (neat but not what i was expecting), and when i tried option-esc., the screen went dark for a second and front row opened up. can’t figure out why though.

Very strange, try just F5 on its own. I’ve change the sentence to be a bit more clear.

not working for me either. Option + Escape does nothing nor does just F5. do i have to install something for that?

You shouldn’t need to have anything installed. I’ll have to look into this.

@michael: if you got Front Row when pressing opt+esc, I guess you accidently hit cmd+esc, since that’s the default shortcut for Front Row.
The same goes for reading things out loud. When you pres cmd+f5 you’ll turn VoiceOver on (you can find it in the Universal Access.prefpane under System Preferences), so I’m guessing you accidently held down the cmd+button.

Just in case: the buttons are from left to right: (fn), ctrl, option, cmd, spacebar. If ‘fn’ is there depends on the keyboard you’re using. You want to hit option (so the 2nd from the left) + esc, not cmd + esc.

Works just great for me with F5. I appreciate your posts because I start each day checking stock prices with a widget and end up reading your posts. Very handy. Thanks

    hey there

i really really like this trick and your posts. THANKS guys!

    but ;)

… is there a way to configure this option that it will always show the auto-compeltion – suggestions-dropdown menu? (without hitting alt+esc or F5,…)

like when your typing in the google searchfield

Thanks in advance… this would be more than awesome :)
