Syllabus – Students Keep Track Of Studies

If you are a student in any form of education you may find it slightly difficult to keep track of files and all the related clutter that you tend to accumulate as you go through the school year. You could use iCal or simply write down what you need to keep track of, but like myself you tend to forget until the very last minute. This is a where a new app comes in, its called Syllabus. It is designed for students to be a one stop resource for making sure you have everything you use in one place.

Disable Access to System Preferences-or any App 3

Tip

Disable Access to System Preferences-or any App

If you have a Mac which is used by a couple of people in the house, you may want to restrict access to certain apps. This is so people don’t run amok with the settings and screw up your computer. It is rather simple to do this. I am going to show you two ways to do this. The recommended way through System Preferences or the less common way which is harder to revert. This type is focused on System Preferences, since you don’t want people messing around with these settings, but it can be applied to any app.

Set Mail’s Emails To Thread View 2

Set Mail’s Emails To Thread View

This is just a quick but useful tip I have come across over the last couple of days. In a nutshell when you view emails in Mail, you get the latest one first, followed by the second and so on, the order depends on how you have set them out. This is fine most of the time, but if you are tracking an email conversation it may become difficult to follow. This is where thread view comes into play.

MacKeeper – Keep Your Mac Squeeky Clean

Today I am going to take a mini break in dispensing tips and tricks, and I am going to do a quick application review. If you care about your Mac (and disk space) you will realise that it doesn’t take long before your Mac starts to fill up with information. When you download applications cache, language logs and whole heap of other files are created. These take up disk space, and to a certain extent can slow your Mac down. This is where today’s app comes in. MacKeeper is an app that can get rid of all these random files that you don’t need and reclaim your disk space. It is a handy all in one tool.

Disable Quarantine Msg When Downloading Files 2

Disable Quarantine Msg When Downloading Files

When you download files in Firefox and Safari and then open them you will get a message asking you if you want to open the file. It goes along the line of ‘”Example” is an application you have downloaded from the internet, are you sure you want to open it’, with various options. Its designed as a message barrier to stop you opening malicious files that could harm your Mac. The problem I have is that its a bit annoying and I know what I am downloading, if only there was some way of disabling this message. Thankfully there is, and like may commands to change preferences it is a one liner and only takes a couple of moments.

Solve Running 64bit Problems With X11 and Java 0

Solve Running 64bit Problems With X11 and Java

Its quite hard to explain, in a simple title, the cause and solution to this problem. If you have ever run an X11 or Java program (or both at the same time) you may find that the program doesn’t run, or appears with a random error. I have also seen problems where the program in question runs, but all of the text is garbled. I first found this problem when trying to install MATLAB, the program wouldn’t run after the installer. The solution is rather simple and I assume it is transferable to other applications. This post may be very specific and you may not needed it, however if you ever come across a problem which involves X11 and Java keep this post in mind.
