When you start working on your projects, particularly those involving many changes and files it can be difficult to keep track of which file contains which change. The problem is compounded when you start receiving files from other people. Although you could have some complicated naming system, you can never be sure that you have transferred across the correct change. I am going to show you how you can compare files and folders, see the changes and merge the contents so you have the latest and greatest copy. Its a way to see how files differ and vary, see which parts are missing, which parts are changed or which parts are new.
The app I am going to use today is Kaleidoscope. It is designed to compare files, folders and even images. When you are comparing a file, you need to see what differs. Which parts are deleted, changed or new from one to another.
Once you have dragged the files you want to compare into Kaleidoscope, you get the two copies side by side. Each version is compared, you get to see the changes between the two. For example, you see which sections have been modified, which sections are new, or which have been deleted. For example, in the image below we can see the green is a new section, the has been deleted and the purple is a section that has been changed.
Once we have seen the changes, we can select a variance and then merge it across. For example in the version on the right has a change that is new, we could then merge this across to the one on the left.
If you have many files, you can compare between them and see the changes between different files. Kaleidoscope allows you to move between files as quick as you can in Finder. It takes no time at all to see changes and find the changes. The app works which many different file types, including Word.
This app also extends into being able to compare folders. Sometimes I have made a duplication of a folder, made some changes and then forgotten what the changes are. By dragging a folder into the window you can compare the contents.
In this view you can also select the files you wish to compare. A quick selection allows you to see the changes within a folder and then within a file.
Kaleidoscope is a great way of comparing the differences between files and folders. If you find you have many differences, or are always comparing files for the subtle change you can never find, this app might be very useful.
The app is a bit expensive, however there are a multitude of uses. I use it for files and folders, although you can use it for images as well. The comparing methods allow you to see the differences between files quickly and easily.
