We have a quick post today to explain how the power button works within Mac OS X on the new operating system Mavericks. The developers changes the way the power button works, and it is worth pointing out the different features. Now when you hit the power button, it will turn your screen off. Your Mac will still be running however the screen will be off. This doesn’t send your Mac to sleep it just puts it into a low power mode.
To get the shutdown, restart and sleep dialogue box you need to hold the power button for three seconds. The window will pop up and you will be allowed the option to shutdown, restart or put your Mac to sleep. This is the traditional functionality of the power button.
If you hold the power button for longer than three seconds your Mac will power off. This is a power cycle and shouldn’t be used to normally power your Mac.
